SQL Server TempDB

Number of TempDB data files – How many?

One of the often over looked configuration settings in SQL Server database that even some senior database administrators miss is allocating enough data files in TempDB.

The default is single data file especially on older versions of SQL Server. The setup wizard of SQL Server 2016 has fixed the issue and makes sure you have a sufficient number of TempDB data files based on number of CPU cores.
Rule of thumb for number of data files is to add same sized primary data files equal to half the number of CPU cores and add more as needed.
